Scottish Fisheries Museum - telling the history of fishing in Scotland through the years.

Boat Building

The Scottish Fisheries Museum has been looking to get a boat-building project off the ground within the Museum for some time. This is now underway thanks to a partnership with the Adam Smith College and a Recognition Grant from Museums Galleries Scotland.

Through the Adam Smith College, four students will be selected to participate in the project and will work within the Historic Boatyard (formerly Smith and Hutton Boatyard) inside the Museum.

Initially, it is planned to build the ‘St Ayles Skiff’, designed by internationally renowned small boat designed Iain Oughtred. This will provide the desired mix of tradition, seaworthiness, speed and ease of build. They are designed to be built with the Clinker Ply construction method.

It is hoped this project will have many community benefits, including developing and inspiring a community-rowing event/competition.

If you are interested in the St Ayles Skiff, and the prospect of racing these skiffs, please go to: http://scottishcoastalrowing.org to find out more about the project.
