NEW EXHIBITION

Portrait of NelsonHMS VictoryTo mark the bicentenary of Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and as a contribution to events under the umbrella of SeaScotland 2005 the award-winning Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther is mounting a public exhibition, "Nelson Against Napoleon". The exhibition illustrates events in the lives of these two great war leaders and highlights the Scottish contribution to naval victories in the Napoleonic War. On display will be material covering:

the invasion threat to Britain in 1804-5
the sequence of naval battles, culminating in Trafalgar, which confirmed the Royal Navy's dominance over the fleets of France and Spain
the special contribution of Scots surgeons to the Royal Navy
the role of fisher-folk in the defence of the realm
the final defeat and exile of the Emperor Napoleon

It is highly appropriate that this exhibition, the most significant on a Nelsonian theme in Scotland this year, should be staged in Fife, whose sea-girt communities have such strong maritime traditions and produced many prominent figures in the naval war against Napoleon. It should be essential viewing for all lovers of the sea and followers of the deeds of Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey.

The Exhibition is open daily, from 23 September to 30 October.
