Tourist Attraction of the Year
The Scottish Fisheries Museum are very proud to be announced
the winners of the Midlands Business Today Tourist Attraction
of the Year Award 2004 and are very grateful to all the staff
and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the high standard and
friendly atmosphere in the museum.
This is what the Midlands Business Today had to say:-
“Midlands
Business Today are delighted to announce the Tourist Attraction
of the Year 2004, as the Scottish Fisheries Museum due to the
excellent array of history and developments that it has available
for visitors to view and research.
Spectacularly situated on the harbour front in Anstruther, in
the heart of the Fife fishing community, the Scottish Fisheries
Museum tells the story of fishing in Scotland and its people from
earliest times to the present day.
Fish have been recognised as a major food source by people from
around the world from the earliest times, Archaeologists have
shown that fishing was important to the first people who settled
in Scotland around 7,000BC, however at this time in history, fishing
was a subsistence activity, undertaken only to feed the fisherman
and his immediate community.
Fishing, today is an important factor to international trade,
with imports and exports taking place all over the world, from
Scotland to China.
Since it was opened in 1969 the Museum has grown in size and in
the range of its galleries. In addition to the original harbour
building and courtyard, there is a covered boatyard, which houses
a 78ft “ZULU”
fishing vessel dating back to the very early 1900’s.
The Museum also has a newly refurbished shop which stocks unusual
gifts and keepsakes of a fishy theme. There is also a tearoom,
serving home made hot and cold food.
Another feature of the museum is the Chapel, which commemorates
all the Scots who have lost their lives at sea while fishing.
With a significant photographic archive and an extensive programme
of events throughout the year, the Scottish Fisheries Museum is
well worth a visit.”
